A few days ago, filmmaker James Gunn revealed that a character from his film Suicide Squad had tried to kill Superman. From the trailer released on YouTube on Tuesday, it was clear that it is Robert DuBois aka Bloodsport, played by Idris Elba.
The trailer begins with the story of the anti-hero, which has just been presented at DCEU. The footage shows Amanda Waller revealing that Bloodsport was arrested because he shot Superman with a bullet made of Kryptonite.
So for the bad guy, the greatest achievement of life was to make the man of steel end up in the ICU. Of course, it is not yet known whether this could mean a cameo by Henry Cavill.
When the DuBois comic book debuted in the fourth edition of Superman magazine, written by John Byrne in 1987, the character was introduced as a man who was manipulated by Lex Luthor, going on to believe that Superman was evil, destroyer of humanity, attributing to the hero the disgrace of his brother, who was severely wounded as a combatant in the Vietnam War.
Bloodsport in the comics has faced Superman a few times and has even used such bullets made with kryptonite. DuBois even made a needle with the famous metal of the planet Krypton just to hurt his rival and he did succeed. He was captured, arrested and sent to the island of Stryker, where he confronted a man who also instilled Bloodsport, but was racist and named after Alexander Trent.
The trailer for Suicide Squad also introduces Dubois’ daughter Tyla DuBois, whose own criminal record seems to be part of the motivation for DuBois to work reluctantly for Waller.
Given the fact that Bloodsport does not canonically have a daughter in the comics, it will be interesting to see how this relationship influences her father’s time in Task Force X.
