Disney+ is coming up with a new The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series. Both Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie will return in the series as The Winter Soldier and The Falcon. However, the major question that arises in the series is, “Who will be the next Captain America?”
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, we saw Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) going back in time to return the Infinity Stones back to where they came from. However, Steve choose not to come back and stayed back in time to live out his life with Peggy Carter. He returned as an old man to visit Sam and Bucky. At this moment, he entrusted his shield to Sam.
After this scene, fans assumed that Sam will become the next Captain America. However, that is not the case, at least not yet.
Anthony Mackie who is currently busy promoting his Netflix film, Outside The Wire, said in a recent interview,
“No, we don’t know that yet. The show, the idea of the show is basically, you know, at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield, but at no point in time, did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America. So the show walks the line of who is going to take up the shield and who’s going to be Captain America if Steve isn’t coming back.”
Thus, even Mackie is unaware of the next Captain America identity. According to him, whoever takes the status of Captain America will become the central element of the The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series.
It seems we will have to wait a little bit longer to find the identity of the next Captain America.
The series is directed by Kari Skogland and many familiar faces will be returning in the series like Daniel Bruhl as Zemo and Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter. Wyatt Russell will be joining the MCU as John Walker, a U.S Agent.
